Better and clearer English

Admirable as the ability of non-native speakers to speak and write English is, the fact remains that often the result is, not surprisingly, stilted and non-idiomatic. Knowing when to use and not to use the definite article and the possessive apostrophe, for example, is often a source of confusion and error even for the most fluent non-native speaker.

A particular skill that Zigurds has, combining (where appropriate) linguistic and technical knowledge, is in ‘making sense’ of material in English submitted for publication by non-native English speakers. Very often, this material despite the best efforts of the author, is badly phrased and makes use of imprecise or actually misleading terminology. The end result, if not edited by a specialist, can be irritatingly difficult to read or understand, and, in a technical area such as tax, for example, can even lead to costly error.

This is particularly important in journals containing a number of such texts. Unless edited expertly and synoptically, these may well lack a consistent style and meaning, both within a single issue and taken collectively.

Or perhaps you are a native English speaker, but feel that your writing lacks that final, polished edge? Perhaps you are a PhD. MA or MSc candidate with a finished dissertation and need help with grammar, punctuation and style? Zigurds, who has an MA (in historical studies) himself (following a BSC in physics) can help you put the finishing touch to your own words.
